Augustyn
inspired by his brother WESLEY Augustyn (NMMU) says his older brother's exploits in the Tour de France will inspire him when defending his overall lead in the third leg of the Jaco Rademeyer cri-terium series at NMMU on Sunday. "His (John-Lee's) footsteps are too big to follow just yet, but I hope to put in a good performance nevertheless," said the 19-year-old, who cemented his lead with a fine victory in the second leg a few weeks ago. Having just returned from the Sassu tour in Stellenbosch, where he finished in the top 10 overall, Augustyn believes he'll be ready for what he expects to be a "very aggressive" race. "I feel like I have a huge target on my back," he said this week. "But my team will work hard to neutralise most of the attacks so that I can focus my attention on the danger men. "Riders like Andre Burger (PE Club) and Wayne Pheiffer (Wayne Pheiffer Cycles) have been quiet so far and I expect them to show themselves on Sunday." Sunday's race starts at Sam. Crossman takes the honours in criterium series
TOP under-23 cyclist Andrew Crossman led home a superb one-two finish for the NMMU Cycling Club when he took line honours in the first leg of the Jaco Rademeyer Estates criterium series at NMMU on Sunday. The 20-year-old crossed the line in the 60-kilometre race in the company of team-mate Wesley Augustyn, 19, closely followed by Cycle Lab's Wesley Todkill, 18. Former Springbok and pre-race favourite Andre Burger (PE Club) remained in the hunt for the overall title when he comfortably won the bunch sprint for fourth place, some 10 seconds behind the leading trio. Crossman showed his aggressive intentions early on when he initiated the first big escape of the day on lap two. He was joined by Augustyn and Sean Baillie (NMMU), but they were hauled back by the bunch two laps later. The next successful attack came on the eighth lap when leading triathlete Raynard Tissink (Friendly City Cycling Club) broke clear of the pack, but his solo effort lasted only three laps. The decisive move came shortly after his capture when Crossman, Augustyn and Tod-."kill attacked with eight of the 21 three-kilometre laps remaining. The three hotspots were won by Tissink, Jean Nell (Wayne Pheiffer Cycles) and Augustyn. The second leg will take place at NMMU at Sam on Sunday. Posted by admin

-Sportredaksie Posted by admin
